On this episode of Porter's Projects I am going to show you, "How to make a photo frame". The photo frame is going to be a pretty simple one, pretty much anyone can do it and you don't need a lot of equipment. Okay so what I am going to mark the stock as to which part of the frame it is going to be. So these two I am going to mark as top and bottom and then these two I am going to mark as the sides. I'm go ahead and cut a forty-five just on one end of the stock and then I am going to pull off of it to measure. That way I may sure that I'm not cutting off part of the length that I need. I went ahead and marked out the lengths of the appropriate sides on all of them so I am go ahead and cut them now. we are going to use the table saw to cut a rabbit back on all the pieces we are going to go back a quarter of an inch and down a half inch on that three quarter inch stock and that will give you enough room for your glass and your picture as well as your backing to go in. So now when you are setting your table saw to cut this we are going to set it so it is going to be that quarter inch back on the stock, it is going to be a quarter inch back here, but you can't just use the gauge on the table saw because if you do you are actually going to be taking out more than a quarter of an inch so you want to go ahead and get your tape measure and your going to bring that blade up to where you can measure off of it. So you are going to want to set it to where it is a quarter of an inch to the outside of the blade, not to the inside because that is where the usual gauge measures to so there is a quarter of an inch, so go ahead and set it there. The other part that you have to make sure you do is you are going to want to go ahead and set your blade height up to where it's a half inch. I am going to rotate that a little bit and make sure your cutting point is your highest. See there is a half inch, looks like. One thing to make sure of is that cutting on the inside of the frame don't cut the outside or else it screws everything up. Alright so now what we are going to do is we are going to set the table saw, you could do all this with a router however I am just going to use the table saw, now you set the table saw so it is only going to go, the blade is only going to stick up that quarter of an inch, but then you are going to set the saw so you are cutting that half inch in, and I will show you. Okay, there is a quarter of an inch. And then we will want to set it, for this is a half inch to the outside of the blade. So now when you run the stock through you are not going to run it on its broadside you are going to stand it on edge, and you are going to put this cut part up against the fence so then the blade is going to be cutting right here. kay so what we are going to do now is cut a dado, and its basically just a channel putting your top and bottom pieces to your frame so we are basically going to cut a channel from here to here, okay? and this channel is where your backing part that is going to hold your pictures and glass in is going to sit, your glass and your pictures are sitting up here, your channel is here and then this piece will be to hold your back in. So we are going to set it all up just the same way we have done on all the other cuts on the table saw. So in order to get the channel cut right where we want it. We are actually going to set the table saw. The table saw is going to be set to where it is a quarter of an inch from the fence to the outside of the blade. Okay, so will go ahead and do that. So right now we are sitting at about a half inch, and so then there's three eighths and there's a quarter. You want the blade to be sticking up above the deck three eighths of an inch and the reason for that is because we already cut from the inside edge in a quarter of an inch on that dado then what we have to do is set it another eighth of an inch to cut into this face here. Alright so now that we got it all cut now what we are going to do is actually fasten the pieces together to finish the picture frame. Little joint fasteners basically all you do is hammer them into the wood at your joints.
